How to register your business with SSM
What is SSM?
SSM (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia) is the Companies Commission. All businesses must register with SSM.
Types of business registration:
- Sole proprietorship (1 owner)
- Partnership (2+ owners)
- Private limited company (Sdn Bhd)
How to register:
- Choose business name
- Prepare documents
- Register online or at SSM counter
- Pay fee
- Receive registration certificate

- Sole proprietorship: RM60/year
- Partnership: RM60/year
- Sdn Bhd: RM1,010+

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register my business if I work from home?
Yes, all businesses must register with SSM regardless of location, including home-based and online businesses.
How long does SSM registration take?
Sole proprietorship/partnership: Immediate (online). Sdn Bhd: 1-3 working days if documents are complete.
Can foreigners register a business in Malaysia?
Yes, but with restrictions. Foreigners can own Sdn Bhd companies (subject to approval). Sole proprietorship generally requires Malaysian citizenship or PR.
What happens if I don't register my business?
Operating unregistered business is an offense. Penalties include fines up to RM50,000 and/or imprisonment. Also cannot open business bank account.
