Public vs Private Healthcare
Comparing government and private healthcare options
Two healthcare systems
Malaysia has both public (government) and private healthcare. Both are good, but they have differences.
Public Healthcare:

- ✅ Good quality doctors
- ✅ 24/7 emergency
- ❌ Long waiting times
- ❌ Crowded
Private Healthcare:

- ✅ Comfortable facilities
- ✅ Short waiting times
- ❌ Expensive
- ❌ Need insurance or cash
Which should you choose?
- Minor illness: Either is fine
- Emergency: Go to nearest (public or private)
- Chronic condition: Public (more affordable long-term)
- Specialist care: Public (get referral first)
Important numbers:
- Emergency: 999
- KKM Hotline: 03-8883 4000
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I go from private to public hospital?
Yes, you can seek treatment at public hospitals after private consultation. Bring all medical records. You'll pay public rates (RM5) but may need to queue again.
Do public hospitals accept insurance?
No, public hospitals don't bill insurance directly. You pay nominal fees (RM1/RM5) and can claim from insurance later if your policy covers public hospital treatment.
Are private hospitals better than public?
Not necessarily. Both have qualified doctors. Private offers comfort and speed; public offers affordability and comprehensive specialist care. Many doctors work in both sectors.
What if I can't pay at a private hospital?
Private hospitals may require deposit before non-emergency treatment. For emergencies, they must stabilise you first. If unable to pay, you may be transferred to public hospital.
