What is an ambulance for?

An ambulance is a special vehicle that brings medical help to you fast. The people inside are trained to give you medical care before you reach the hospital.

When should you call an ambulance?

  • Someone has fainted or is unconscious.
  • Someone cannot breathe properly.
  • Someone is having a heart attack or stroke.
  • Someone is badly injured from an accident.
  • Someone is in severe pain and cannot be moved safely.

What number do you call?

Call 999. It is free. It works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What do you say?

  1. Your name.
  2. Where you are (full address or nearest landmark).
  3. What happened and how the person looks right now.
  4. Whether the person is conscious and breathing.

While waiting for the ambulance:

  • Keep the person still and calm.
  • Do not give food or water.
  • Do not move them unless there is immediate danger.
  • Stay on the line with the operator if possible.

Types of ambulance services:

  • Government ambulance - Free, for emergencies
  • St. John Ambulance (SJAM) - NGO, 24/7 service
  • Malaysian Red Crescent - NGO, community service
  • Private ambulance - For non-emergency transfers (paid)
